1 lakh Rohingya’s to be shifted to Bhasan Char Island next month

Cox Bazaar, Oct 21 (BAN/ AD): Government is all set with plan to move around 1 lakh Rohingya’s to flood-prone island next month. As per plan 100,000 refugees will be shifted to Bhasan Char – a Bay of Bengal island. This will bring relief to overcrowded camps at Cox’s Bazar.

Government sources say several thousand refugees have agreed to move to the island. Dhaka wants to move 100,000 refugees to Bhasan Char.

As the island is prone to devastation from cyclones many refugees have opposed the plan which some human rights experts fear could spark a new crisis. Already local communities are turning hostile towards Rohingya’s as government second attempt to send them back in August failed.

Since August 2017 number of refugees in Cox’s Bazar has increased after Myanmar military-led crackdown. A UN human rights investigator who visited in January said she feared a new crisis if Rohingya were taken to the island.

UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar says “There are a number of things that remain unknown to me even following my visit, chief among them being whether the island is truly habitable.”
