Dhaka, Oct 31 (BAN/ AD): As onion prices are soaring Government is planning to import 60,000 ton of onion from Egypt. Prices of onions have risen to Tk150 per kg. , Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said govt is importing 60,000 tons of onions from Egypt to cover the deficit in the onion market.
The minister was at International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in Dhaka on Thursday he said “Among the 60,000 tons, 10,000 tons are on their way to Bangladesh.” He added “The price of onions hiked as Myanmar alone was unable to fill the deficit, and also because a few dishonest traders were increasing the price taking advantage of the supply shortage.”
As per Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) prices of onions soared as high as Tk150 per kg in Dhaka’s markets. In local market onion prices are around Tk140-150 per kg, and onion imported from Myanmar at Tk130. On October 2, the wholesale prices of local and imported onions were at Tk60-70 per kg.
PM has responded to high onion prices saying its temporary crisis and nothing to worry about.
