769 kgs of cocaine publicly destroyed

Colombo, April 2: The cocaine which was seized by police from nationwide raids from past few years which had accumulated was today destroyed publicly by authorities on orders of President Sirisena.

President Maithripala Sirisena was present in warehouse in the outskirts of Colombo where drugs worth over Rs 10 billion ($57 million) was destroyed on Monday. Speaking at the event, Sirisena said this was the second time the government was publicly destroying all the drugs seized by the investigating officers in raids conducted throughout the country.

In January 2018 900 kg of cocaine was destroyed. Sri Lanka has become a transit hub for drug smugglers in Asia. President stressed that death penalty for drugs related conviction would be soon implemented.
