Archdiocese of Colombo condemns minister Mangala’s tweet

Colombo, Jun 6 (BAN/CD): The Archdiocese of Colombo, today, condemned Minister Mangala Samaraweera’s tweet that claimed Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith ‘fanned the flames of hatred and communalism by visiting Athuraliye Rathana Thera who was fasting in Kandy’.

The Council of Priests of the Archdiocese of Colombo, in a statement, said that the tweet gives a distorted interpretation of the Cardinal’s visit to Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera.

The letter signed by Council’s Secretary Rev. Fr. Freely Muthukudarachchi said that they strongly oppose Minister Mangala’s criticism of the Cardinal’s effort at advocating religious harmony.

Rathana Thera’s fast unto death is being conducted to expedite the outcome of the investigation into the Easter Sunday attacks and for the removal of two governors along with a cabinet minister from office, who allegedly have close ties with those responsible for the attacks.

“We also state that as Catholics we will continue to support the peace efforts among religions, especially among the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers and others as a longstanding common heritage of the citizens of Sri Lanka and inform Minister Samaraweera and all others engaged in spreading erroneous and vengeful comments via social media of the same”, the letter said.

The letter also stated that the Cardinal’s leadership and contribution in the aftermath of the April 21 attacks in maintaining peace and appealing to Sri Lankans to not harm the Muslim community is commendable.
