Army put on alert to provide relief to flood affected areas

Colombo, Sep 25 (BAN/ AD): As southern part of Sri Lanka is battling heavy rains Sri Lankan Army, Navy and the Air Force have been put on alert to provide relief to the people affected.

Army sources have said teams of 30 troops each have been deployed to locations and are on standby if the need arises. Regions affected by flood are Matara, Galle, Kalutara, Kegalle, Ratnapura, Gampaha, Mapalagama Hiniduma areas. In the event of a serious disaster, troops from the units in the surrounding areas are on standby to be deployed, the Army Spokesperson said.

Till now no serious accidents are reported. Accordingly, Navy relief teams comprising personnel from the Rapid Response Rescue and Relief Unit (4RU) and Diving Unit have been attached for rescue and relief duties in Thawalama, Baddegama, Udugama, Poddala, Imaduwa, Nagoda in the Galle district and Bulathsinhala, Walallawita in the Kalutara district as well as Akuressa in the Matara district.
