Colombo Chief Magistrate sends MP Champika Ranwaka to remand until Dec 24

Colombo, Dec 19 (BAN/ AD): Colombo Chief Magistrate has sent former Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka to remand until Dec 24. He was produced in court today. Amid special protection he was brought to court around 9 am who was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division for causing serious injury to a person in an accident and fleeing.

On Wednesday evening he was arrested from his residence in Battaramulla by the Colombo Crimes Division on the instructions of the Attorney General. Later after recording a statement for about two hours, he was produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Neranjala de Silva at around 10.00 pm.

The accident occurred 2 years ago on 28 February 2016 at Sarana Mawatha in Rajagiriya, a suburb of Colombo where Ranawaka’s vehicle collided with a motorcycle left two young men injured. Later former minister said refused that he was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident. A person claimed to be the driver of the Ministry vehicle surrendered to the police following day. He was arrested and released on a Rs. 500,000 bail.

But 2 eye witnesses gave affidavits to court claiming that it was the former minister at the wheels.
