Compensation given to families of 2 Soldiers killed in Mali

Colombo, Nov 06 (BAN/ AD): On Tuesday families of 2 Army personnel killed in January this year while on peacekeeping operations in United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) have been given compensation granted by the United Nations.

Yesterday at Army headquarters Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva gave the compensation to the families of posthumously promoted Major H.W. Dinesh Jayawickrama and Sergeant S. Saman Wijekumara.

The compensation has been given to dependent family members, including children, spouses and parents of both families. Army official said the compensations has been given to the parents of late Major Jayawickrama and to Sergeant Wijekumara’s mother, wife and children according to the UN guidelines and its framework for compensations.

January 25, 2019 armored WMZ vehicle was attacked by a remote-controlled Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the general area of Douentza in which Captain H.W. Dinesh Jayawickrama of 11 Sri Lanka Light Infantry from Polonnaruwa and Corporal S. Saman Wijekumara of 1 Mechanized Infantry Regiment from Thalakolawewa, Polpithigama of the Sri Lankan Army Contingent in Mali were killed.
