Colombo, Jan 04 (BAN/ AD): At an event the Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has expressed his opposition towards constructing of coal power plants. Archbishop was speaking at an event at the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama where he said government should not go ahead with the proposals of coal-powered projects. He stressed that this would affect lives of people who live in the nearby areas of coal power plants.
He said coal power plants are being rejected worldwide. He said the power plants are not only harm the eco system, but also to the health of the people in the surroundings. He also gave example of the Norochcholai Coal power plant. He said the farming and fishing communities in the area can speak for the impacts of the coal power.
As per reports ash from the plant has been accumulating since it started operations in 2011. The surrounding area people are facing serious health problems. Archbishop also urged government to shut the Norochcholai coal power plant and explore other alternatives.
