Country belongs to people, not rulers, Cardinal Ranjith hits out at govt

Colombo, Jun 5 (BAN/CD): During his visit to Mp Ven Athuraliye Ratana Thera, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said that the problem would not have blown out of proportion today if President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe had taken necessary measures against those who aided and abetted the terrorist attacks.

“People have given a mandate to the President, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet to govern the country for five years. They had not been given a lifetime right to be in office. They have not been given the country on freehold basis. The country belongs to people, not to its rulers. The rulers should be mindful of it. The time has come to take a decision on the President and the Prime Minister,” he said.

He added that if the President and Prime Minister could appoint Minister Rishan Baithudeen, then they also could remove him from his position.

The Cardinal is of the opinion that there have been no proper investigations into the Easter Sunday attacks so far.

He told the media that nobody is investigating to find out who is indirectly involved in this attack and that the President and Prime Minister should launch a proper inquiry into the attack immediately.

MP Ven. Athuraliye Ratana Thera is conducting his fast because the government has failed to do what the people want, the Cardinal believes. He urged the President and the government to find out the persons who were creating hatred and to take strict action against them.
