Colombo, Jan 07 (BAN/ AD): On Tuesday former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena was sentenced 3 years jail by Colombo Magistrate’s Court over a case on misappropriation of state funds.
Former Deputy Minister was sentenced by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne after he was found guilty of causing losses to the government while he was chairman of the Development Lotteries Board. Former minister was also fined Rs. 300,000 in addition to the jail term by court.
Bribery Commission had filed case against Sarana Gunawardena alleging that he had incurred losses to government when he leased three vehicles at a cost of Rs. 960,000. This took place while he was the chairman of the Development Lotteries Board from May 5, 2005 to April 30, 2007 during the Mahinda Rajapaksa government.
Former minister was tried under the Public Property Act for misusing state property. After trial Colombo Chief Magistrate found him guilty and delivered the verdict stating that the charges against the accused had been proved beyond a reasonable doubt.
