Declare climate emergency, minister requests Cabinet

Colombo, Jul 14(BAN/CD): The Cabinet has been requested by Megapolis and Western development Minister Patali Champika on Sunday, to declare climate emergency as there is scarcity of water for drinking, agriculture and power generation triggered by lack of monsoon rains this year.

He said the country should brace for such an eventuality by taking adequate precautions and underscored the importance of ‘climate independence’ promoted by the United Nations.

“That should be done to mitigate the impact of climate change,” he said.
