Election Commission orders Police to remove material promoting Presidential candidate on vehicles

Colombo, Oct 30 (BAN/ AD): Police has been ordered by Election Commission to vacate stickers and flags and photographs of the candidates promoting them in violation of Election law.

Election Commission had received complaints following which directive was issued to Police that stickers and flags and stickers supporting presidential candidates are being displayed on three-wheelers, buses and other private vehicles to be removed.

Mahinda Deshapriya EC chairman says such acts of promoting candidates are an offense under section 74 of the Presidential Election Act No 15 of 1981.He has instructed DIGs, Divisional Police Officers and OICs to carry out urgent inspections covering all police areas to remove the stickers and flags displayed on all private vehicles, including private buses and three-wheelers.
