Ershad laid to rest in Rangpur with state honours

Rangpur, July 16 (BAN/ AD): The former president Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad has been laid to rest with state honours in Rangpur after confusion about the burial spot. On Tuesday afternoon he was buried at the Litchi Orchard of his Palli Nibash.

Scores of people including Jatiya Party leaders and activists, lawmakers, leaders and activists and army personnel attended his funeral.

Army personnel carried his coffin draped in an Army flag to his grave. They organized the burial and ensured discipline at the venue as thousands of people thronged there to bid farewell to Ershad. A one-minute silence showing respect to him was observed after the life sketch of the Jatiya Party chairman was read out.

After Ershad death there was confusion on his burial place. Local leaders had insisted he be buried at Rangpur instead of senior party leaders who had earlier decided to bury Ershad at the Military Graveyard in Dhaka. Local leaders in protest dug a grave at Palli Nibash on Monday night.

Air Force helicopter carried the body of Ershad from Tejgaon airport in Dhaka to Rangpur.

Jatiya Party acting Chairman GM Quader, Secretary General Moshiur Rahman Ranga, former secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader, and Ershad’s son, Rahgir Al Mahi Shad Ershad were along with Ershad body.
