Esala Perahera festival begins with ‘Kap’ ceremony in Kandy

Kandy, Aug 02 (BAN/ AD): Traditional “Kap” planting ceremony took place under the guidance of Mohottala of the Temple of Tooth, Sri Dalada Maligawa. With this ceremony the historic Esala Perahera festival of Kandy started.

On Friday morning at 5.10 am ritual of planting kappas at four the four Devales commenced following which, the processions of the four Devales begin.

On 5th August first Kumbal Perahera will start with procession at an auspicious time at the main entrance of the Temple of the Tooth Relic and continue for five days until the 9th of August.

Randoli Perahera will be held for five days from the 10th of August and the final Randoli Perahera will parade the streets on 14th of August. The festival will come to an end with the Water cutting Ceremony on the 15th morning.

The hill capital of Kandy hosts Esala Festival, which is a tradition dating back to the eras of Kings, which attracts thousands of devotees, pilgrims and foreign visitors.

Heavy security arrangements have been undertaken. About 7000 police personnel including STF personnel have been stationed in Kandy for the security of the Esala Perahera.
