Colombo, Jan 25 (BAN/ AD): On Friday EU EOM published 2019 presidential election report and has said elections were well managed and were tainted by biased coverage by private and state media.
The report was published by Ms. Marisa Matias Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) to Sri Lanka.
The report has 23 recommendations and offers a comprehensive assessment of all aspects of the 16 November 2019 presidential election.
“An electoral process well managed by the Election Commission and a peaceful campaign on the ground contrasted with divisive rhetoric, hate speech and disinformation in traditional and social media.” Said Chief Observer Matias.
She also added “The absence of a law on campaign finance and the biased election coverage by private and state media contributed to an uneven playing field and limited the opportunity for most candidates to convey their message.”
In its final report, the European Commission’s Election Monitoring Mission has given priority to the following six of the 23 recommendations.
