Gambling in Lanka to get costlier

British Asia News Network- AD

Colombo: The casino operators are unhappy with government move to increase license fee for operating casino in Sri Lanka. With this move gambling space of Sri Lanka got more costly. Finance minister, Mangala Samaraweera has made announcements in this regard.

The fee has been increased to $2.2 million from $1.1 million, which is a substantial increase from current fee.

Moreover casinos will be obligated to collect an entry fee of $50 per person, per visit. Many are of opinion that this will affect casino revenues but the minister points out that casinos in Singapore charge an entry fee, and that fee is higher than what Sri Lanka is now charging.

Sri Lanka has received interest from many international operators as tourism is flourishing in the country. Las Vegas Sands has also expressed that it was considering jumping into the fray after it failed in its attempts at launching in India.
