Gotabaya Rajapaksa sued in U.S. over alleged torture and murder

Colombo, April 11: Former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who played crucial role during conflict with LTTE, under his Brother Mahinda Rajapaksa’s rule a decade ago, is being sued in two cases in the United States. He has been accused of torture and murder of Tamils. Gotabaya, is said to interested in running for Presidential elections is quite popular among Lankans for his role in ending conflict with LTTE which lasted 26 years that ended in 2009.

Gotabaya has rejected all allegations made against him. Rights organization have been accusing him of multiple crimes during the civil war, including extrajudicial killings. Milinda Rajapaksha, Gotabaya’s spokesman, said the former defence secretary has yet to receive “any official document or notice” on the cases.

International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP), based in South Africa has joined hands with U.S. law firm Hausfeld and human rights lawyer Scott Gilmore, and has filed case in California this week against Gotabaya. This has been done on behalf of a Tamil victim, Roy Samathanam.
