Gotabhaya allowed to travel abroad for treatment, hands back passport

Colombo, Oct 03 (BAN/ AD): On Thursday Gotabaya Rajapaksa was given permission to travel abroad for medical treatment from 9th to 12th October. The order was passed by the Permanent High Court. Gotabaya Rajapaksa is former Defense Secretary and presidential candidate.

Special High Court’s bench comprising Judges Sampath Abeykoon, Sampath Wijeratne and Champa Janaki Rajaratna is hearing case against Gotabaya filed by the Attorney General, for allegedly misappropriating state funds to construct the D.A. Rajapaksa Museum and Memorial in Medamulana.

The request to release Gotabaya passport was filed by President’s Counsel Ali Sabry on his behalf on October 1. The request was made as Gotabaya Rajapaksa has decided to contest Presidential Election and the passport is needed to prove the identity over nominations.

President’s Counsel Ali Sabry also said his client had undergone cardiac surgery in Singapore and is due to travel overseas from October 9 to 12 for a medical examination related to his surgery. On Thursday Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, said that he was not opposed to Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s request.

The 3 bench judge also temporarily lifted the travel ban on Gotabaya. The three-judge bench also ordered Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to return his passport to the custody of the judiciary upon his return to the country.
