Government of Japan gives US$ 635,420 to the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) for humanitarian activities

Colombo, Nov 29 (BAN/ AD): A sum of US$ 635,420 (approx. Rs. 110 million) has been given by The Government of Japan to the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) for humanitarian demining activities in Northern Sri Lanka.

On 28th November 2019 grant contract was signed by Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka Akira Sugiyama and the Country Director of MAG Ms. Valentina Stivanello at the Ambassador’s Residence in Colombo.

Similar 2 grants were provided by the Government of Japan for the similar purpose in October this year. The funds will be used for facilitating the resettlement and recommencement of agriculture and other livelihood activities for the Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs).

The money will also be used for ongoing mine clearance in the Northern region, and to contribute directly or indirectly improvement of living for over 2,000 families in Mannar and Vavuniya Districts.

Since 2003 Japan has been major donor for Sri Lanka with the objective of assisting the nation to be mine impact free by 2020.
