Governor of the Eastern Province calls for solution to teacher shortage in the East

Colombo, Jan 30 (BAN/ AD): As Eastern province is facing shortage of teachers Anuradha Yahampath, Governor of the Eastern Province has called for solution as soon as possible. She said they have been facing this problem for a long time in schools of the Eastern Province.

She said that in the 17 educational zones in the Eastern Province there are 600 vacancies for teachers including for Science, Mathematics and English. Out of them 298 are in Sinhala medium and 302 are in Tamil medium. She also asked authorities if there are excess teachers in other schools to be transferred to the nearest zones and to establish a teacher balance.

Governor also advised to take steps to train around 3,000 untrained teachers on a zonal level and instructed the Zonal Directors to commence the training program within two weeks in April.
