Hambanthota Port leasing to be reconsidered: President Gotabaya Rajapaksa

Colombo, Nov 26 (BAN/ AD): Leasing of Hambanthota Port to China for 99 years would be reconsidered as per New President. He has said that leasing the Hambantota port to China for 99 years was a mistake made by the previous government.

President told “We are not afraid to see this as a mistake, even though China is a friend of ours and they are aiding our development.” He added “we should reconsider it as it is not for two years but for the future.”

In his first solo media interaction as President he has made these comments. He will be visiting New Delhi soon. He said his country wants to be neutral and has no intention of intervening in the power struggle of world superpowers. He also told “We dont want to get in between the power struggles of superpowers. But we want to work with all countries.”

He said Hambanthota Port was commercial transaction by China and not Chinese intervention as feared by India, Singapore, Japan and Australia. He invited interested countries to invest in Sri Lanka and promised to create a friendly environment for investment.
