Colombo: PM visited the area on Thursday to discuss the starting of the 45.27 million US dollars infrastructure project provided by Indian government last year.
The PM directed officials to work quickly to finalize land acquisition and other works of the three-year development plan.
Indian government has provided financial assistance for upgrading the harbor into a commercial port and equip it to handle general cargo.
The transformation of the port is aimed to boost import and export sectors while generating direct and indirect employment opportunities in Tamil-majority province.
Under this plan, the harbour’s basin will be deepened to 8 metres allowing it to handle general cargo ships. Ports minister said one existing pier will be completely rehabilitated and a new pier will also be constructed.
The harbour and its berthing piers were extensively damaged during the tsunami in 2004 and the cyclone ‘NISHA’ in 2008.
