Magistrate acquits a prostitute

Sri Lanka 19 feb 20 (BAN/RL) Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake acquitts a woman prostitute arrested by Police on chargeof prostitution, said prostitution was not an offence in Sri Lanka for a woman to earn for living. However, he said operating a brothel is an offence.

Citing two earlier Superior court judgements, he said, ‘prostitution is not an offence under theLaw’. He emphasised Vagrants Ordinance and the brothel Ordinance are the Laws govern prostitution in Sri Lanka. While acquitting the woman, he said there were no prevailing Laws in Sri Lanka since colonial times against a woman, who independently engaged in prostitution as a means of earning.
