Colombo, Aug 19 (BAN/ AD): Major General Shavendra Silva has been on Monday appointed new Army commander by President Maithripala Sirisena. He has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. Monday morning he has received his letter of appointment from the President.
Major General Shavendra Silva replaces former Commander Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake who retired after serving more than two years as the Commander. Major General Shavendra is the 23rd Commander of the Sri Lanka Army.
Lieutenant General Silva joined the Sri Lanka Army as a Cadet Officer in 1984 and held the position of Chief of Staff of Sri Lanka Army prior to this appointment. Secretary to the President Udaya R. Seneviratne, Secretary to the Ministry of Defense Major General (Retired) Shantha Kottegoda were also present on this occasion.
