Many Lankans are seeking asylum on tiny Reunion Island near Africa

British Asia News Network- AD

Colombo: Smugglers are charging hefty USD 3000 to take Lankans to Reunion Island near Africa which has a population less than a million people. The number of Lankans reaching Reunion had increased from late last year after the political crisis.

Asylum seekers numbers is increasing slowly which is worrying French authorities. From 2016 to 2018, the island received 105 asylum applications of which Lankans accounted for majority. The sudden increase can also be linked to the political crisis that unfolded in Sri Lanka few months ago.

Mahinda Rajapaksa, the former president and architect of the final phase of a government offensive that wiped out the Tamil rebellion, laid claim to the premiership in a bid to remove Ranil Wickremesinghe, the current prime minister.

Rajapaksa later backed down but the resurgence of the popular Sinhala-Buddhist leader in Sri Lankan politics sparked fears of aggression against those connected to the rebellion, and against minorities.
