Minister Akila Viraj: Ministry has power to regulate schools under new Education Act

Colombo, Aug 21 (BAN/ AD): Minister of Education, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has said that under new Education act Ministry of Education has the power to regulate international schools and other schools.

Minister clarified that currently the international schools are registered as a company or business under the Companies Act or the Business Registration Ordinance, the Ministry of Education does not have the necessary details of these schools.

Under new law Education Ministry has authority to regulate all types of schools, including international and private schools in Sri Lanka. The Minister further said the discussions are underway with the Department of Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs to regulate and monitor the Madrasa Schools and to bring them under the Education Ministry.
