Mobile courts jail 307 fishermen for fishing during ban

Dhaka, Nov 01 (BAN/ AD): In Manikganj Mobile courts have jailed 307 fishermen for fishing during ilish ban. There was ban for fishing from October 9 to October 30. The fishermen are jailed for transporting, catching and hoarding of mother ilish across Bangladesh.

3547 metric tons of ilish has been seized by mobile courts and fine to the tune of Tk560,000 for violating the government ban. On Thursday during an press briefing Mohamamd Maniruzzaman, fisheries official of District fisheries Department gave the information.

Mobile courts carried out 125 drives and 319 cases were filed during this period. At least 5,292,000 meters of electric nets were also seized in the drives, which were burnt later.

Press briefing was attended by Shibalaya Upazila Executive Magistrate AFM Firoz Mahmud. The ban on catching, selling, transportation and hoarding of ilish from October 9 to October 30 was imposed by government.
