Sri Lanka: The Constitutional Council (CC) yesterday approved the nominations of Appeal Court Judges Justice S. Thurairaja PC and Justice E.A. G. R. Amarasekara to be appointed to the Supreme Court (SC).
The Constitutional Council also approved High Court Judge Priyantha Fernando to be appointed to the Court of Appeal (CA).
High Court Judge Fernando is presently serving in the Gampaha High Court. The CC chaired by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya met at the Parliamentary complex yesterday.
In all President Maithripala Sirisena had forwarded the names of four judges, out of which the C. C. appointed two judges for the existing vacancies in the Supreme Court.
The Council also received the names of another four High Court judges of which the C.C. approved High Court Judge Priyantha Fernando. The other two judges among the four judges the President nominated to the Supreme Court were Justice Deepali Wejesundera and Justice Kumudini Wickramasinghe. The names of other three judges the President nominated to the Court of Appeal were A.A. Heiyanthuduwa, Aruna Ranasinghe and Kusala Sarojini Weerawardena.
The Speaker, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan are ex-officio members of the CC.
Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorala, former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, Ports and Shipping Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe and JVP MP Bimal Rathnayake were appointed to the CC early this month, while its new Civil Society representatives are Dr .Jayantha Dhanapala, Ahmad Javid Yusuf and Naganathan Selvakumaran.
