Opposition questions US citizen’s appointment as chief of Sri Lankan airlines

Colombo, Jun 23 (BAN/CD): According to the Opposition’s claim yesterday, the government had appointed a corrupt and inefficient citizen US citizen as Chief Commercial Officer of Sri Lankan Airlines with a monthly allowance of Rs 3.5 million.

Joint Opposition MP Kanaka Herath told the parliament that under the CCO’s administration, an Afghanistan airline had gone bankrupt and closed down. He had also been involved in financial fraud through an agreement signed in Afghanistan with a US company.

The MP also questioned the need to pay such a high allowance to him and whether a Sri Lankan was not available for this post.

State Minister of Finance, Eran Wickramaratne said when enquired from the SriLankan airlines board of directors, he was told that the defence ministry had given a clearance to recruit this person.
