Slave Island, Sep 05 (BAN/ AD): Department of Immigration and Emigration has arrested 44 Indians for overstaying their visas at a construction site at Slave Island today. As per sources 44 Indians were arrested while they were working at the construction site. The arrested persons are aged between 25 to 50 years.
They were staying on visas expired 3 months back. An official said “It was revealed while questioning the suspects had not been paid salaries on a regular basis.” He added “They are to be handed over to the Mirihana Detention Centre.”
Officials have also impounded 18 passports of persons who were working at the same construction site as their visas did not allow them to work at that particular site. The Immigration Department team is conducting investigating the matter.
