Police arrest 4 youths for killing leopard in Udawalawe National Park

Colombo, Jan 06 (BAN/ AD): On Sunday Hambegamuwa police have arrested 4 youths on suspicion of killing a leopard in Udawalawe National Park. On Dec 31 a fully grown male Leopard was found shot dead at the Mau Ara Tank in the Udawalawe National Park. As per reports the leopard’s forelegs were severed and the teeth had been pulled out.

Police say 4 youths had set a trap for animals and the leopard was caught in the trap. As per Police investigations the trap was set about 50 meters from the road towards the park. The leopard got caught in the trap was found dead and one of the suspects has taken the carcass to a house in Kumarapura area in the Sevanagala police division.

However, the residents have refused to keep it and told the men to dispose the carcass, which had then been dumped in the canal connecting to the Mau-Ara tank.

The post mortem report mentioned that the leopard had died after getting caught in the trap. Police Special Task Force and wildlife officials conducted a joint operation and arrested 4 youths. All 4 are residents of the Nelumwewa area in Udawalawa and are reportedly hunters. The suspects have been handed over to Sevanagala Police for further investigations. On Monday 4 youths will be produced before the Embilipitiya Magistrate’s Court.
