President claims global drug trade had links with Easter Sunday attack plotters

Colombo, July 02 (BAN/ AD): President Maithripala Sirisena while addressing western province ceremony of the National Drug Prevention Week held yesterday said Easter Sunday plotters were linked to the global drug trade.

He said “There is a close connection between international terrorism and the global drug trade. The involvement of several politicians with drug peddling is not a secret. I’m not sure how many politicians toil to save the Sri Lanka from danger.”

He pointed out that drug trade has capacity to destroy a nation and he doesn’t want Sri Lanka become another Mexico. He mentioned from 2015 to 2019, over 24,818 kilos of various drugs were seized. Also more than 50,000 people are arrested every year in connection to drug trade. The value of the stock of narcotics circulating in the country each year is over a staggering Rs.50 billion.
