Colombo, Dec 16 (BAN/ AD): President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed to recruit 54,000 unemployed graduates for state service by next January. The decision was taken in a meeting attended by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Minister of Industrial Exports, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation, Prasanna Ranatunga said.
Minister Prasanna Ranatunga also said a project to provide 100,000 government jobs to low income people will be commence soon all Grama Seva areas. He said since clearing the GCE (O / L) Examination is considered as a necessary qualification for employment in the lowest grade of the Public Service, the opportunity for those who have failed the O/L examination to get employment in the government sector is limited.
At present, it is compulsory to have passed six GCE Ordinary Level subjects with two credits for the recruitment to the lowest grade of the Public Service. As a result, youths in low income families who have not passed GCE O/L are unable to join the public service.
