Public warned to be vigilant of extortion by police over Easter Attack

Colombo, Jun 12 (BAN/CD): Police Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekera revealed yesterday that an organized racket is in operation trying to extort money from the relatives of the suspects who are in custody over the Easter Sunday attacks.

The organized racket attempt to extort money from the relatives of these suspects by impersonating police officers and assuring them of various rewards and financial benefits.

“The gang who are impersonating them as police reported to have contacted and demanded money in return to release the suspects either in remand custody or detention,” Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara.

The gang reportedly called several individuals claiming they were from the police, according to information received by the police. They told the individuals that the police wanted to arrest them over the April 21 attacks and demanded money from them to prevent their arrest.

SP Gunasekara has requested the public to remain vigilant and report to the nearest police station if they receive such telephone calls demanding money.
