Ranil refutes allegations that he hampered Sajith Premadasa’s election campaign

Colombo, Nov 23 (BAN/ AD): Ex PM Ranil Wickremesinghe on Friday refuted allegation that he had hampered Sajith Premadasa’s election campaign. He said neither himself nor the present mechanism of the party is responsible for the defeat of Sajith Premadasa.

Ranil was at the party headquarters Sirikotha on Friday morning when he said the party machinery and the Sirikotha did their best for the Sajith’s election campaign.

Ex PM told “I proposed Sajith Premadasa as our presidential candidate in this presidential election. We unanimously accepted the proposal and went to the polls with the other parties.”

He told this at a media briefing after thanking the staff of the UNP headquarters Sirikotha for their support at the presidential election. He said he didn’t disrupt Sajith election campaign or the party mechanism.

He said “We delegated responsibilities to our key members, ministers and MPs. I took over the responsibility of the North and East votes. I was able to increase that percentage. But unfortunately in the other seven southern provinces our votes were reduced. It caused this defeat. While we won some districts, overall we lost.”
