Colombo, July 1(BAN/ AD): On Monday SC has received 10 fundamental rights petitions challenging the President’s decision to carry out the death penalty violates their fundamental rights. Several prisoners awaiting death penalty through their lawyers have filed their fundamental rights petitions in the Supreme Court.
The petitions have named the Attorney General, the Minister of Justice, the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice, the Commissioner General of Prisons, the Welikada Prison Superintendent and several other parties as respondents. Petitioners have challenged the President’s decision on ground that selecting only those involved in drug trafficking from the death penalty is a violation of the fundamental right of equal treatment under Article 12 (1) of the Constitution. SC has been requested to issue an injunction order restricting implementation of the death sentence.
