Colombo, Jun 23 (BAN/CD): Senior DIG Southern Province Ravi Wijegunawardena was questioned for seven hours in relation to the murder of two businessmen from the Rathgama area by the Criminal Investigations Department(CID) on June 19.
Manjula Asela (30) and Rasith Chinthaka (31), two businessman involved in the fish and chicken trade, were abducted, killed and their remains torched before they were buried in a remote spot inside a forest reserve in Walasmulla.
SDIG Wijegunawardena was called in for the first time to record his statement in connection with the murder. The questioning went on for 7 hours, starting from 9.30 am to 5 pm. Another questioning is due in the near future so that another statement can be recorded.
It was alleged that the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) which came directly under SDIG Wijegunawardena was involved in the murders of the two businessmen.
Seven suspects including the OIC and Acting OIC of the SIU were arrested and are awaiting trial.
