Colombo, Oct 30 (BAN/ AD): On Tuesday President Maithripala Sirisena declared the historic Roman Catholic Church, Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu in Mannar district as a Sacred Area.
‘Sannas Pathraya’ was presented by President declaring the Our Lady of Madhu Church in the Mannar District as a sacred area to the Bishop of Mannar.
Catholics, Buddhists and Hindu’s flock the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu to pay homage. Pilgrims in large number including foreign tourists visit the 400 year old shrine during the annual Madhu feast.
In recent times Shrine was not maintained properly due to the war and other issues by which the surrounding area has become decrepit and pilgrims used to face hardship due to lack of facilities.
President Maithripala Sirisena had visited the Madhu Church in July last year, and said there is urgent need to develop the Church and the surrounding areas. Roads, sanitation, water supply facilities etc., has to be provided. In August 2019 cabinet approved the President’s proposal to declare the Madhu Church as a Sacred Area.
