Sirisena does U-turns on civil war crimes investigation

Colombo: President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday said that he did not want to “re-open old wounds” and doesnot intend to investigate war crimes. Government troops were accused of killing at least 40,000 ethnic Tamil civilians in war against LTTE which lasted 37 years finally ending in May 2009.

“It is a decade since we have established peace in this country,” President told reporters in Colombo. “I want to tell them (the UN) not to pressure us.”

Sirisena after coming to power in January 2015, Promised to ensure accountability for war-time abuses. It is estimated by UN that over 100,000 people perished during fight against LTTE.

In Oct 2015 UN Human Rights Council resolution granted Sri Lanka 18 months to start a investigation and the period has ended with no results.

President has said that he will send three of his party members to the UNHRC sessions in Geneva this to appeal on his behalf.
