World Bank promises to increase assistance to Sri Lanka

Colombo, July 19 (BAN/ AD): Hartwig Schafer World Bank VP for South Asia Region has said the World Bank will increase assistance to Sri Lanka under three of its new operations. On Thursday Mr. Schafer who called on the President Sirisena said the assistance will be provided for the agriculture sector faced with climatic vagaries, irrigation, renewable energy, climate resilience operations and renovation of tanks in rural areas.

World Bank VP mentioned Sri Lankan economy was impacted by the Easter Sunday terror attack and World Bank help Lanka by monetary assistance to reduce budget gap. President Sirisena expressed his gratitude to the World Bank for continuous assistance to Sri Lanka. President mentioned Lankan economy was badly hit by Easter Sunday attacks.

WB Vice President said that the global community stands by Sri Lanka at this moment of need. He congratulated Sri Lanka for rising to the level of Upper Middle Income Country and said it’s a demonstration of country’s spirit.
