Dhaka, July 9 (BAN/ AD): On Tuesday HC rejected a writ petition seeking a stay order on the recent gas price hike. The petition filed by Advocate Dr Md Eunus Ali Akond was rejected by HC bench comprising of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal. The state was represented by Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Ekramul Huq.
Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Ekramul Huq said “I have explained to the court that there has been no violation of the law in hiking the gas price as the authorities concerned held mass hearings on the gas price and issued a notice in this regard before hiking the gas price.” Meanwhile, Advocate Akond said, state counsel convinced the court that the gas price was hiked as per the law and therefore, the government decision to hike the gas price will remain effective.
The petition was filed on July 4 asking the government to explain why decision of increasing gas price should not be declared illegal.
The gas price was increased in 8 categories including that of household users, despite opposition from consumer rights groups. Half day nationwide general strike was observed by Left Democratic Alliance (LDA) on Sunday.
